87. Hornussen
The Hornussen is a unique traditional Swiss sport, practised mainly in rural areas of the Bernese plateau. The game takes its name from the wooden and metal disc (Nouss), which whistles through the air like a hornet (Hornuss in German) when thrown. One team hits the disc with a long stick to throw it as far as possible, while the other team tries to stop it in flight with special paddles.
Originating as a pastime for farmers in the 17th century, Hornussen is now considered one of Switzerland’s three national sports, alongside Swiss wrestling and stone throwing. It is a game that combines strength, precision and team spirit, keeping the country’s cultural roots and identity alive.
