86. Schwingen

Swiss wrestling, also known as Schwingen, is Switzerland’s national sport. It is a traditional form of wrestling practised on a circular ground covered with sawdust. The competitors wear special trousers made of coarse canvas and try to throw their opponent to the ground while maintaining a grip on his belt or trousers.

This sport has its roots in the rural customs of the Alpine regions and is still very popular today: major tournaments, such as the Swiss Wrestling Festival, attract tens of thousands of spectators. In addition to being a competition of strength, Swiss wrestling expresses values of respect, tradition and national identity.

This miniature was added to the park’s exhibition thanks to the collaboration with the Swiss Traditional Games Association, the Ticino Swiss Wrestling Association and the Eidgenössischer Schwingerverband (ESV). The installation was added in 2025, on the occasion of the Ticino Cantonal Schwingen Festival on 20 September in Biasca.

Opening: 28.08.2025
