18b. Freuler Palace, Näfels (GL)

The Freuler Palace is one of the most magnificent Swiss residences of the 17th century. Its builder was Kaspar Freuler (ca. 1595–1651) from Näfels, a Swiss military entrepreneur who served the kings of France. As a colonel of the guards, he summoned craftsmen from across Europe to Näfels, who, between 1642 and 1648, created a total architectural masterpiece at his request. The lavishly decorated rooms, which are still completely preserved today, bear witness to the wealth of their patron and the outstanding skill of the craftsmen, with impressive stucco work, richly ornamented wood paneling, intricate inlays, and coffered ceilings. Today, the palace houses the Museum of the Canton of Glarus.
